Malik Chandler, 31, impersonated his daughter on the social media platform TikTok to lure the suspected attacker to his home, where he shot him twice. The suspect, Diego Montoya Gonzalez, 20, was later arrested and charged with multiple offenses, including rape and possession of child sexual abuse material.
How the Trap Was Set
Chandler had been shown a video on his daughter's phone that allegedly depicted Gonzalez sexually assaulting her. Determined to confront the suspect, Chandler created a fake TikTok account posing as his daughter and arranged a meeting. When Gonzalez arrived at the Chandler family home, he was met with gunfire and sustained two gunshot wounds.
Police officers who responded to the scene found Gonzalez sitting in a chair at the residence, wounded. He was taken to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries. Subsequent examination of Gonzalez's phone revealed several clips allegedly showing young children being sexually abused, which led to further charges.
Charges and Bail Set
Gonzalez now faces five counts of pandering sexually oriented material, two counts of rape, and one count of obstruction of official business. The court set his bail at a combined $70,000 (approximately £52,000), which includes a $20,000 recognisance bond and a $50,000 cash bond. If he is released, Gonzalez would be prohibited from contacting the victim and from using the internet except for work-related purposes.
Meanwhile, Chandler was charged with felony assault and released on a $100,000 cash bond. He told police that his initial plan was to beat Gonzalez and then call authorities, but he shot him when he believed Gonzalez was about to draw a weapon.
