Trump's Bible Reading: A Desperate Plea to Evangelicals?
In a recent event, Donald Trump read a passage from the Bible urging repentance, seemingly targeting evangelical Christians who remain his steadfast supporters. This move comes amid scandals and declining support from other groups.
The Bible Reading Event
Trump participated in 'America Reads the Bible,' a week-long public reading of the Bible from Genesis to Revelation. He read 2 Chronicles 7:14, a verse popular among Christians as a political and spiritual call to action. The event, organized by Bunni Pounds of Christians Engaged, aims to encourage a return to spiritual foundations.
However, critics point out the irony of Trump, a convicted felon and defendant in multiple scandals, reading scripture. Trump has been found liable for falsifying business records in a hush-money scheme and sexually abusing E. Jean Carroll. Despite this, evangelicals continue to support him.
Evangelical Support vs. Catholic Wobble
While Catholic support for Trump has dipped below 50%, evangelicals remain solidly pro-Trump. This is largely due to his role in appointing Supreme Court justices who overturned Roe v. Wade, restricting abortion rights. Evangelicals lack a central moral authority like the pope, making them more susceptible to political alignment.
The event also featured other politicians like Senator Ted Cruz and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, but Trump's first-person delivery of God's word stood out, reinforcing his 'God complex.'
Moral Contradictions
The Bible reading underscores the moral contradictions of Trump's support among evangelicals. While he promotes spiritual renewal, his policies have led to unnecessary wars, deportations, and foreign aid cuts causing global suffering. Yet, for his supporters, this performance seems to strengthen their faith.
As Emma Brockes notes, 'if a convicted felon reading a passage from the Bible makes you feel closer to God, then all one can say is good luck to you.' The question remains: do evangelicals have a red line, and can they find it?
