Green Party Leader Zack Polanski Targets Trade Union Funding in Bid to Replace Labour

Zack Polanski, the leader of the Green Party, has initiated a strategic campaign to persuade trade unions to cease their financial support for the Labour Party and instead align with the Greens. This move is part of his broader ambition to position the Green Party as a viable alternative to Labour, particularly among working-class voters.

Polanski's Union Outreach Efforts Gain Momentum

According to party sources, Polanski has engaged in "good conversations" with approximately 10 trade unions, including some that are currently affiliated with Labour. He is scheduled to address key unions such as the University and College Union and the Bakers, Food and Allied Workers Union in the coming months, both of which are not affiliated with Labour.

However, major unions like Unite and Unison have publicly denied any negotiations with Polanski, reaffirming their affiliation with the Labour Party. Despite this, Unite is conducting internal discussions about its future relationship with Labour, with a special conference set for 2027 that could potentially lead to disaffiliation.

Green Party insiders acknowledge that the discussions with unions vary in formality, but some union representatives dismiss the outreach as insignificant, labeling it "much ado about nothing." Nonetheless, shifts in leadership within unions like Unison suggest that future disagreements on political agendas could open doors for alternative alliances.

Surge in Green Party Support and Membership

The Green Party has experienced a significant boost in polling following its first national byelection victory in Gorton and Denton. Membership in England and Wales has tripled since last September, now standing at around 200,000. A Green Party source emphasized Polanski's goal: "When Zack became Green party leader he said his goal was to replace Labour – and building strong links with trade unions is a central part of that plan."

The source added that working-class voters are increasingly turning to the Greens to address the cost of living crisis and protect their rights, criticizing Labour for backtracking on promises made in opposition.

Polanski's Education Speech Wins Union Applause

In a recent address to the National Education Union (NEU) annual conference in Brighton, Polanski delivered a scathing critique of the government's education policies, earning a standing ovation. He called for the abolition of Ofsted, increased funding for schools, and a halt to the expansion of academies.

As the first Green leader to speak at the NEU conference, Polanski argued that education has been undermined by ideological reforms and budget cuts. He proposed funding education through taxes on extreme wealth, accusing the Labour government of merely "tinkering" with issues instead of implementing radical change.

Polanski's proposals resonated strongly with NEU members, who also oppose Labour's introduction of additional testing in schools. He advocated for a curriculum that emphasizes arts, vocational subjects, media literacy, and critical thinking skills to prepare children for modern challenges like climate change and AI.

Union Leadership Responds Positively

NEU General Secretary Daniel Kebede welcomed Polanski's speech, noting that over 60% of NEU members voted Labour in the last election. Kebede stated, "I think our membership feels that Zack speaks more for schools and education than Labour do at the moment." This endorsement highlights the potential for the Green Party to gain traction among union members disillusioned with Labour's policies.

Polanski's efforts mark a bold step in reshaping political alliances, as the Green Party seeks to capitalize on growing public support and challenge Labour's traditional base among trade unions.
