Green Party Leader Polanski Slams Privatisation in Major Economic Speech
Polanski: UK Basics Sold for Profit, Calls for Economic Overhaul

Green Party Leader Polanski Condemns Privatisation of Life's Basics in Major Economic Address

In a landmark speech billed as his most significant policy intervention since assuming leadership six months ago, Green Party leader Zack Polanski has launched a scathing critique of successive governments for transforming the UK into an economy where the fundamental necessities of life have been privatised and rented back to citizens at exorbitant costs. Delivering his address to the New Economics Forum thinktank in London, Polanski argued that decades of economic rebalancing have favoured a minority asset-owning class, leaving the majority vulnerable to shocks like the current surge in fuel prices.

Polanski's Vision for Economic Reform and Support Measures

Polanski outlined a stark vision of "rip-off Britain," where hard work no longer guarantees affordability of basics such as water, energy, and housing. He emphasised that a sustained project of privatisation and deregulation has shifted the economy from production to profit-making for the wealthy. To address this, he called for immediate government action, including setting aside £8.4 billion to cover potential household energy price increases of £300 amid uncertainties from the Iran conflict, funded by tightening the windfall tax on energy companies.

His speech detailed a three-point economic plan: implementing rent controls, re-nationalising water, and decoupling electricity prices from gas costs; reforming the tax system by equalising capital gains tax with income tax; and overhauling the fiscal framework for greater effectiveness. Polanski also lamented the economic damage of Brexit, estimating it has reduced the UK economy by 6% to 8%, and criticised past policies like Thatcher-era privatisations and austerity measures.

Green Party's Rising Influence and Policy Direction

Since becoming leader, Polanski has overseen a surge in Green Party membership in England and Wales, with the party now leading in some polls and securing victories like last month's Gorton and Denton byelection. Despite his energetic media presence, he has previously said little on policy due to the party's decentralised structure, making this speech a pivotal moment to articulate his economic philosophy. Polanski urged a shift from "managed decline" to harnessing human compassion for a fairer economy, positioning the Greens as a growing force in UK politics focused on tackling inequality and the cost of living crisis.
