Green Leader Apologizes for Police Criticism Post

Green Party leader Zack Polanski has issued an apology for sharing a social media post that criticized the police officers involved in the arrest of the suspect in the Golders Green attack. The incident has sparked a heated exchange with Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mark Rowley, who accused Polanski of fueling tensions.

Polanski's Apology and Statement

In a statement released on Thursday, Polanski acknowledged his mistake and the responsibility that comes with leadership. "Everyone in leadership has a responsibility for lowering the temperature at a time of such tension, and I apologise for sharing a tweet in haste," he said. He emphasized that while police responses to emergency situations require later reflection in appropriate forums, social media is not the suitable channel for such discussions. Polanski also extended an invitation to Rowley to meet and discuss both the police response and the broader issues raised in the commissioner's letter.

The Controversial Post

The controversy began when Polanski reshared a post on X (formerly Twitter) that alleged the officers who arrested the Golders Green attack suspect "were repeatedly and violently kicking a mentally ill man in the head when he was already incapacitated by Taser." The post quickly drew criticism from law enforcement and community leaders.

Rowley's Response

Metropolitan Police Commissioner Mark Rowley responded sharply, accusing Polanski of exacerbating "rising tensions." In a statement, Rowley highlighted the fear among London's Jewish communities following a series of targeted attacks. "London's Jewish communities are scared. They have experienced a series of targeted attacks on the community, and they expect our officers to act, protect them," Rowley said. He added that the officers acted appropriately and that Polanski's decision to criticize them using his public platform would have a "chilling effect."

The exchange underscores the high emotions surrounding the Golders Green attack and the delicate balance between accountability and support for law enforcement in times of crisis.
