Merseyside Police have launched an urgent manhunt after a suspect escaped from a custody van moments after it arrived outside Liverpool magistrates' court. Stephen Grzyb, 22, was due to appear in court this morning charged with a domestic-related burglary, but fled the scene on Red Cross Street, heading towards The Strand.
Police released a photo of Grzyb as part of an immediate public appeal, confirming that he remains on the run. He is described as white, with short, dark hair, and was last seen wearing a navy T-shirt and navy shorts. His last known address is Princess Drive, Liverpool.
Police appeal for public assistance
Inspector Bethan Hannon of Merseyside Police addressed the public directly, urging anyone with information to come forward. 'We understand the concern this incident will cause, and it is vital the public can see Grzyb's face so they can report any sightings and help us bring him back into custody as soon as possible,' she said.
Hannon stressed the seriousness of aiding a wanted individual: 'Assisting him in any way will bring police to your own door, so it is not an association worth keeping. If you see Grzyb, please call 999 immediately.'
Extensive searches underway
Officers are conducting extensive inquiries across the city centre, including foot patrols and CCTV reviews, to locate the suspect. Patrols have also been dispatched to the home of the alleged victim in the case to ensure their safety and gather any additional information.
Grzyb's escape has raised concerns in the local community, and police are working diligently to return him to custody. The exact circumstances of his escape have not yet been disclosed, but the incident occurred shortly after the van arrived at the court premises.
