Hampstead sees progress in fight against crime and street clutter

After years of persistent complaints, collaborative efforts between services and security teams in Hampstead are beginning to yield tangible results, according to Cllr Linda Chung, Liberal Democrat councillor for Hampstead Town ward at Camden Council. The councillor notes that shop assistants are regaining confidence, and professional thieves are finding it harder to operate in the area.

Improved security and business confidence

Writing in her capacity as a local representative, Cllr Chung described how Hampstead's streets had previously been marred by litter, blackened pavements, Lime bikes, and tables and chairs scattered across walkways, making it difficult for pedestrians to navigate. She also highlighted the presence of A-boards and the intimidation of shop assistants by shoplifters, which made the area an easy target for criminals.

Complaints about antisocial behaviour and blatant criminal activity had previously gone nowhere, but Cllr Chung says that after years of work, with the support of colleagues, her calls for services and forces to join together are finally getting through. She credits changes in leadership and proactive individuals for making the difference.

Remaining challenges and business concerns

Despite the progress, Cllr Chung acknowledges that there is still much more to do. She expressed regret that some businesses feel targeted by the new refuse collection enforcement regimes and the prohibition on A-boards, stating that Camden needs to get these issues right and improve communication clarity.

The councillor was also shocked to learn that the business rates annual consultation received no responses, a situation she found unsurprising given her own experience working in a high street office. She emphasised the need for both local business owners and corporate entities to be fairly informed about acceptable practices, particularly regarding pavement space and business conduct.

Looking ahead

Cllr Chung stressed that Hampstead is fortunate to have business owners who live and work in the area, while welcoming the "corporates" as a different species requiring different care and attention. She urged bosses who are present to ensure their own behaviour conforms to reasonable pavement space rules, and corporate leaders to protect their staff through proper training and awareness of business conduct regulations.
