Prince William Shares Unseen Photo of Diana for Mother's Day Tribute

The Prince of Wales has posted a previously unseen photo of his mother, Diana, Princess of Wales, from the family's private collection to commemorate Mother's Day. The image, shared on social media, shows a young Prince William, aged two, with his mother in a field of blooming flowers, including poppies, at Highgrove, Gloucestershire, in 1984. This heartfelt gesture is believed to mark the first public sharing of this intimate family moment.

A Poignant Remembrance

In his caption, Prince William wrote: "Remembering my mother, today and every day. Thinking of all those who are remembering someone they love today. Happy Mother's Day." The photo bears a striking resemblance to a 1994 Christmas card image featuring King Charles III with his sons, Prince William and Prince Harry, also taken in a poppy field at Highgrove, highlighting the continuity of family traditions and memories.

Prince William was just 15 years old when his mother died in a tragic car crash in the Pont de l'Alma tunnel in Paris on August 31, 1997. Diana, who was 36 at the time of her death, would have celebrated her 65th birthday on July 1 this year, adding a layer of poignancy to this Mother's Day tribute.

Family Tributes Across Generations

The Prince of Wales has previously spoken about how his own children—Prince George, Princess Charlotte, and Prince Louis—honor their "Granny Diana" each Mother's Day by creating handmade cards. In 2021, Kensington Palace shared these heartfelt messages, showcasing the enduring legacy of Diana within the royal family.

  • Princess Charlotte, then five, wrote: "Dear Granny Diana I am thinking of you on Mother's Day. I love you very much. Papa is missing you. Lots of love Charlotte xxxxxxxxx."
  • Prince George, aged seven at the time, expressed: "Dear Granny Diana, Happy, happy mothers day. I love you very much and think of you always, Sending lots of love from George xxxxx."
  • Prince Louis, then three, contributed a painted heart adorned with animal stickers to commemorate his grandmother.

Broader Royal Family Celebrations

To mark this year's Mother's Day, the Royal Family also shared additional photos on social media platform X, including images of the late Queen Elizabeth II. One photo depicts Queen Elizabeth with a young Prince Charles and Princess Anne at Balmoral in 1953, before the births of Prince Andrew and Prince Edward, featuring the Queen's corgi, Sue, in the background. Other pictures show the late Queen with her mother, Queen Elizabeth the Queen Mother, and Camilla with her late mother, Rosalind Shand.

The captions for these posts read: "Wishing Mothers everywhere, and those who might be missing their Mums today, a restful Mothering Sunday." This collective effort underscores the royal family's commitment to honoring maternal figures and fostering a sense of connection during this emotional holiday.
