Alexandra Eala clinched her maiden WTA Tour singles title on Monday, defeating world No. 3 Jessica Pegula 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 in a rain-interrupted final at the DC Open in Washington. The 21-year-old Filipino became the first player from her country to win a WTA Tour-level singles title, a milestone that also lifts her to a career-high ranking of No. 20 in the world.
Comeback After Rain Delay
The final, originally scheduled for Sunday, was delayed by nearly three hours due to persistent rain and was suspended overnight with Eala trailing 1-2 in the second set after losing the first. When play resumed on Monday, Eala regrouped and dominated, winning 10 of the next 13 games to secure the title.
“I feel so much love. My first chance at a title knowing it won’t be the last and already having achieved this milestone for my career,” Eala said on court. “I knew whatever happened after this match would have already been a win for me.”
Dominant Display After Restart
Eala’s left-handed serve and fearless baseline hitting proved too much for Pegula, who was chasing a third Washington title after wins in 2019 and 2021. Despite playing on home soil, Pegula could not stem the momentum, as Eala drew vocal support from the crowd, with Philippine flags waving in the stands.
“I want to congratulate Alex on an amazing tournament,” Pegula said. “To see how far you’ve come over the last couple of years when we first played, to see the amazing fans that follow you every place you go, it’s not fun to play against but I think it’s amazing.”
Streak Against Top-10 Opponents
The victory extended Eala’s winning streak against top-10 players to five matches, following earlier wins over Elena Rybakina, Elina Svitolina (twice), and Iga Świątek. Her breakthrough performance in Washington caps a remarkable rise that has seen her become one of the most talked-about young talents on the tour.
Eala’s title run in Washington is expected to propel her to a career-high world No. 20 when the new WTA rankings are released, marking a significant leap from her previous position.
