Tower Hamlets residents will head to the polls on May 7, 2026, to elect both their local ward councillors and the borough's directly elected mayor. Tower Hamlets is one of only five London boroughs with a directly elected mayor, alongside Croydon, Hackney, Lewisham, and Newham. In the remaining boroughs, a council leader is chosen by the party with the most councillors.
The current administration in Tower Hamlets is led by the Aspire Party, a local party founded and led by Lutfur Rahman, who has served as Mayor since 2022. Aspire holds 22 of the 45 council seats, with Labour closely behind at 16, Independents holding five, and the Conservatives and Green Party each holding one. PollCheck predictions suggest that 80% of seats could go to independents or minor parties, though actual results remain uncertain.
