A murder investigation has been launched in west London after a father discovered a woman's skull while cycling with his children on the night of the solar eclipse. The grim find, made in Bedfont Lakes County Park in Feltham, prompted a large-scale police search that uncovered additional human remains.
Discovery during eclipse viewing
The man was cycling with four children in the parkland, known locally as the Pits, when he spotted the skull on August 12. Crowds had gathered at the park to view the solar eclipse that evening, and the atmosphere was reportedly pleasant before the shocking discovery.
The father reported the find to police and guided officers to the exact location. The remains are believed to belong to a woman aged between 25 and 45, according to investigators.
Wildfire exposed the remains
A wildfire in the shrubbery of the parkland left the human remains visible, residents told Metro. The fire, which occurred before the discovery, is thought to have burned away vegetation that had previously concealed the remains.
Locals noted that the park had been flat and sparsely vegetated until landscaping about a decade ago. One neighbour said: 'You could see everything in the park it was in the eyeline of the houses so anything untoward would probably have been spotted. It was only the recent fire which uncovered the remains.'
Residents in shock
Donna Hardman, who lives in Padstow Walk adjacent to the park, expressed the community's shock: 'We are all in total shock. A dad out with his kids found a skull on the night of the eclipse. A lot of people had gathered there and it was a nice atmosphere. It must have been just horrible to stumble across something like that with your kids. The dark of the eclipse was obviously a bit creepy and then to find something like this. He seemed to handle it well though, he was calm under the pressure.'
Another resident, Louise Benn, said: 'It's obviously very worrying. It's like we are living on the set of a crime drama. I feel for the guy who found the skull with his kids, that's a difficult thing to explain away.'
Police investigation ongoing
Police were called to the scene at 6.35pm on August 12, and specialist teams including forensics officers have been combing through the park. Detective Chief Inspector Wayne Jolley, leading the investigation, said: 'We have launched a murder investigation following the discovery of these remains and are working to establish the full circumstances of what happened while keeping an open mind.'
Police have stated it is unclear how long the remains had been at the site. The investigation is ongoing, and authorities are appealing for anyone with information to contact police on 101 or anonymously via Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
