Video footage shows the monster truck bouncing over a line of scrap metal before sharply turning right and hurtling toward the audience. Two additional victims later succumbed to their injuries in hospitals across the city.

Popayan’s mayor, Juan Carlos Muñoz Bravo, issued a statement expressing deep sorrow over the accident in the Boulevard Rose area. “We’re deeply saddened by the accident… which has so far left more than 38 people injured and three dead,” he said. “From the outset as mayor, I’ve made all available resources available to support the victims and their families. We’re working closely with hospitals, emergency services and the authorities to ensure people receive prompt, compassionate and dignified care at this difficult time.” He added that he has given clear instructions for a thorough investigation, emphasizing that the incident should never have happened and that the facts will be established with full responsibility and transparency.
Similar Incident in 2015
This is not the first tragedy of its kind. In 2015, a similar monster truck crash in Haaksbergen, Netherlands, killed three people and injured 15 others. Video from that event showed the truck breaking through a safety fence as it wheeled around and revved its engine in preparation to drive over parked cars. The mayor of Haaksbergen at the time confirmed that one of the fatalities was a child. Organizers had claimed that safety fences were placed sufficiently far away to keep the crowd safe, but the incident raised questions about safety protocols at such events.
