Jeffrey Dean Rose, 46, of Apsley Close, North Harrow, has been charged with manslaughter and aggravated burglary following the death of 75-year-old Rose Smith. Smith died in hospital on August 12, a day after police were called to reports of a burglary at Tollington Park in Finsbury Park.
An 81-year-old man was treated at the scene and taken to hospital but is believed to have been discharged the following day. Rose was arrested 10 days after the incident and is due to appear at Barkingside Magistrates’ Court today.
Family pays tribute to 'life and soul of the party'
In a statement, Smith’s family described her as “the life and soul of the party” and said her loss was “the most devastating loss our family could ever have imagined.” They added: “Rose was a truly wonderful, outgoing woman who was loved by so many people. She loved bingo, going to cafés with her friends and, above all, spending time with her family. She treasured the time she spent with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchild.”
The family asked the public to remember Smith for “the person she truly was,” calling her “loving, fun, kind, sociable and full of life.”
Court appearance scheduled
Rose faces charges of manslaughter and aggravated burglary in connection with the incident. The case is scheduled to be heard at Barkingside Magistrates’ Court today, where the defendant will appear before magistrates.
Police had initially responded to the burglary report on August 11, with the 81-year-old man receiving medical attention at the scene. The investigation led to Rose’s arrest, and the subsequent charges were brought following a review of evidence.
The court proceedings will determine the next steps in the case, with the charges carrying significant legal consequences if proven.
