Donald Trump faces overwhelming disapproval from Latino voters according to a comprehensive new study, marking a significant shift in political sentiment within one of America's fastest-growing demographic groups.
Dramatic Decline in Latino Support
The Pew Research Center's recent report reveals that 70% of Latino voters now disapprove of Donald Trump's performance as president. This represents a notable decline from the 2024 election, where Trump secured support from nearly half of Latino voters - a substantial increase from his 28% share in 2016.
This demographic, accounting for one in five Americans, has shown particularly strong reactions to Trump's economic and immigration policies. The study found that 65% disapprove of his administration's approach to immigration, while 61% believe his economic policies have actually worsened economic conditions across the country.
Policy Reversals and Community Impact
Following the 2024 election, many Latino voters, particularly men, had initially supported Trump based on his economic proposals and perceived moderation on immigration enforcement. Many believed campaign promises that mass deportations wouldn't be implemented aggressively.
However, since taking office, Trump has implemented sweeping tariffs and cuts to social safety net spending, alongside intensified immigration raids. The consequences have been immediate and visible within Latino communities.
According to the Pew report, 52% of Latinos now fear deportation for themselves, family members, or close friends, up from 42% in March. Nearly 60% reported witnessing or hearing about immigration raids or arrests in their communities within the past six months.
Political Consequences and Future Implications
The political fallout has already begun manifesting in election results. Recent gubernatorial races in New Jersey and Virginia showed Democrats successfully winning back Latino voters who had previously supported Trump.
The internal divisions within the Latino electorate remain starkly political. While 81% of Latino Trump voters still approve of his performance (though down from 93% at the start of his term), nearly all Latinos who voted for Kamala Harris in 2024 disapprove of the current administration.
Perhaps most tellingly, Pew reported that for the first time in nearly two decades, most Hispanic Americans believe their situation has worsened. While only 10% said Trump's policies have helped them personally, a overwhelming 78% believe the president's policies have actively harmed their community.
The growing discontent suggests significant challenges for Trump and Republican candidates hoping to maintain their improved standing with this crucial voting bloc in future elections.
