Muslims around the world are preparing to sight the new moon that signals the start of Dhul Hijjah, the final month of the Islamic calendar, determining the exact date of Eid al-Adha 2026. Experts have provided likely dates for the crescent moon visibility in Saudi Arabia, the UAE, and parts of the UK.
Expected Moon Sighting Dates
The crescent moon is anticipated to be visible on Sunday evening, May 17, in Saudi Arabia, where official moon sighting committees will observe shortly after sunset. Favorable viewing conditions are predicted in parts of the Middle East. If confirmed, May 18 will mark the first day of Dhul Hijjah, placing Eid al-Adha on or around May 27. However, if the moon is not sighted, the month of Dhul Qa'dah will complete 30 days, pushing Eid back by one day.
Moon Visibility in the UK
In the UK, some Muslims follow Saudi Arabia's announcements, while others rely on local sightings. Weather conditions may affect visibility; the crescent might be difficult to see with the naked eye, but telescopes and clear skies could improve chances. Mosques and Islamic organizations are expected to issue guidance closer to the date.
London's Eid on the Square Celebration
The major London event, Eid on the Square, will take place on Saturday, May 30, from 12pm to 6pm in Trafalgar Square, marking the 20th anniversary of Eid celebrations at this iconic location. This free event features a main stage hosted by Nadia Ali and Juwayria Ghazali, fencing workshops by Muslim Girls Fence, and art and craft activities in the Alif New Beginnings Family Zone. Attendees can enjoy food stalls and browse community, charity, and retail stalls. Due to popularity, queues are expected, and bag searches will be conducted; visitors are advised to avoid bringing large bags.
Why Eid al-Adha Dates Differ Worldwide
Eid dates can vary globally because countries and Islamic authorities use different methods to determine the lunar month's start. Some rely on physical moon sightings, while others use astronomical calculations. This can lead to Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Pakistan, Morocco, and the UK announcing different dates for Dhul Hijjah.
