Andy Burnham's By-Election Bid: Could He Be Next PM?

Greater Manchester Mayor Andy Burnham has announced his intention to stand in the upcoming Makerfield by-election, a move that could pave the way for a future Labour leadership bid. The by-election was triggered after Labour MP Josh Simons stood down, clearing a path for Burnham to return to Westminster.

Burnham's Statement

In a full statement, Burnham said: 'I can confirm that I will be requesting the permission of the NEC to stand in the Makerfield by-election. I grew up in this area and have lived here for 25 years. I care deeply about it and its people. I know they have been let down by national politics.' He emphasized his record as mayor, including bringing buses under public control and introducing a £2 fare cap, and argued that 'much bigger change is needed at a national level.'

Reactions to the Announcement

Labour MP Nadia Whittome urged the NEC to allow Burnham to stand, warning that blocking him 'would not only gift this seat to Reform but would jeopardise Labour's future.' Reform UK leader Nigel Farage vowed to 'throw absolutely everything' at the by-election, noting Reform's strong second-place finish in the 2024 general election in Makerfield.

Wes Streeting's Resignation

The political turmoil deepened as Health Secretary Wes Streeting resigned, accusing Prime Minister Keir Starmer of 'drift' and calling for a 'broad' leadership contest. In his resignation letter, Streeting said Starmer 'will not lead the Labour Party into the next general election' and urged the PM to facilitate a leadership contest. James Murray, a Starmer loyalist, was appointed as the new Health Secretary.

Labour's Internal Crisis

Deputy leader Lucy Powell called for unity, urging that Burnham, Streeting, and Angela Rayner be seen as 'key players.' However, the resignations of several ministers have highlighted deep divisions within the party. Burnham's bid, if successful, could position him as a leading candidate to replace Starmer.

The by-election is expected to take place next month, with Burnham requiring approval from Labour's National Executive Committee to stand as the party's candidate. If elected, he would return to Parliament after a decade away, potentially setting the stage for a leadership challenge that could reshape the Labour Party.
