Texas Man Faces Federal Charges for Alleged Attack on OpenAI CEO's Residence
Federal authorities have charged a 20-year-old Texas man with attempting to set fire to the San Francisco home of OpenAI chief executive Sam Altman using a molotov cocktail. Daniel Moreno-Gama was captured on surveillance video throwing the incendiary device outside Altman's residence, according to an FBI affidavit filed in federal court this week.
Anti-AI Document Found During Arrest
When San Francisco police arrested Moreno-Gama, they discovered he was carrying a self-authored "anti-AI" document that contained direct threats against Altman. The FBI has cited this document as evidence of motive in the case. According to court records, Moreno-Gama told security personnel at OpenAI's headquarters that he intended to burn the building and harm those inside.
"We are only at the beginning of this investigation, but if the evidence shows that Mr. Moreno-Gama executed these attacks to change public policy or to coerce government and other officials, we will treat this as an act of domestic terrorism and together with our law enforcement partners prosecute him to the fullest extent allowed by law," stated U.S. Attorney Craig Missakian in an official release.
Cross-State Journey for Alleged Attack
Police investigation revealed that Moreno-Gama traveled from Texas to California specifically to carry out the alleged attacks. At the time of his arrest, authorities recovered multiple incendiary devices, kerosene, and a lighter from his possession. The suspect now faces serious federal charges including attempted damage and destruction of property by means of explosives and possession of an unregistered firearm.

If convicted on the explosives charge, Moreno-Gama faces a mandatory minimum sentence of five years and could receive up to 20 years in prison. The unregistered firearm charge carries a potential sentence of up to 10 years.
