Morgan Rogers has revealed why he turned down Arsenal to join Chelsea in a record-breaking £117 million transfer from Aston Villa, calling the Blues 'the biggest club in London.' The England international's move was confirmed on Tuesday, with the 23-year-old signing a seven-year contract at Stamford Bridge.
Record-Breaking Transfer Fee
The £117 million deal surpasses the previous British transfer record of £116 million, set when Elliot Anderson moved from Nottingham Forest to Manchester City earlier this month. It also eclipses Chelsea's own club record of £115 million paid for Moises Caicedo in 2023. Rogers becomes the most expensive signing in Chelsea's history.
Why Chelsea Over Arsenal
Rogers was Arsenal's primary summer target, with manager Mikel Arteta viewing his physicality and versatility in midfield and on the wing as ideal for his Premier League-winning squad. The Gunners appeared to be in pole position to sign him. However, Chelsea moved swiftly and decisively, agreeing a deal on Saturday before Arsenal could accelerate talks after the World Cup.
In an interview with the club's official website, Rogers explained his decision: 'I'm joining the biggest club in London. The way the club wants to go and how it wants to move forward, it is something that I want to be a part of and I think it was just perfect for me.'
Xabi Alonso Factor
Rogers also highlighted the presence of new Chelsea head coach Xabi Alonso as a pivotal factor in his choice. 'I'm really excited about the project with the new manager, the players we've got and where the club is heading. That's why I'm here and I can't wait to get started,' he said.
The announcement video featured former Chelsea star turned pundit Jason Cundy asking Rogers, 'Why Chelsea, why now?' Rogers responded: 'I'm a free spirit, free-flowing footballer, I like to take risks, make things happen, change games, whatever that might take. I can't wait to get going.'
Arsenal's Missed Target
Arsenal had hoped to secure Rogers, with reports claiming he spoke directly to Arteta, who laid out his plans for the player. However, Chelsea's pitch proved more convincing. The Gunners now must look elsewhere to strengthen their squad after missing out on their top summer target.
