A devastating mass shooting at a popular Texas bar has left three people dead and more than a dozen wounded, with authorities now investigating the attack as a potential act of terrorism. Victims Identified as University Students
The three confirmed fatalities include two university students whose lives were tragically cut short. Savitha Shan, 21, was a dual-degree student majoring in management information systems and economics at the University of Texas at Austin. Ryder Harrington, 19, had been enrolled at Texas Tech University and was a member of the Beta Theta Pi fraternity.
Austin Police announced on Monday evening that Jorge Pederson, 30, had succumbed to his injuries, becoming the third confirmed fatality from the attack. The shooting has sent shockwaves through both academic communities and the broader Austin area.
Gunman's Background and Investigation
The gunman has been identified as 53-year-old Ndiaga Diagne, a lawful permanent resident originally from Senegal. According to the Department of Homeland Security, Diagne first entered the United States in 2000 on a B-2 tourist visa before obtaining permanent residency through marriage to an American citizen six years later.
Though police emphasize it remains early in the investigation, authorities are treating the shooting as a potential terrorist act. Law enforcement officials revealed to The Associated Press that Diagne was wearing clothing featuring an Iranian flag design and the words "Property of Allah" during the attack.
Sequence of Events and Police Response
The violent episode unfolded when Diagne drove past Buford's Backyard Beer Garden before circling back and opening fire with a pistol from his SUV. He targeted people both on the footpath and inside the establishment before exiting his vehicle and continuing the assault with a rifle.
Police officers responding to the scene fatally shot Diagne, preventing further casualties. Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis confirmed that both weapons used in the attack - a rifle and a pistol - were legally purchased by Diagne several years ago in San Antonio.

Heartbreaking tributes have emerged for the youngest victim, Ryder Harrington, whose brother posted on Facebook about the profound loss. "It was unfair, to say the least, that my little brother was only given 19 years on this earth," he wrote, adding that "this world was robbed of a great future."
The Beta Theta Pi fraternity remembered Harrington as someone who "had a rare ability to truly enjoy life to make people laugh, to make moments feel bigger, and to make ordinary days unforgettable."
University of Texas at Austin President Jim Davis described Shan's death as "devastating" and noted that several other students were wounded in the attack, some with serious injuries requiring ongoing medical care.

Federal and local investigators are conducting an extensive inquiry into the shooting. FBI acting agent Alex Doran emphasized that determining the motive remains their "ultimate goal."
