Russia Responds to Ukrainian Ceasefire Proposal with Widespread Drone Offensive
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has strongly condemned Russia for launching a massive drone assault in response to his offer of an Easter truce. On Wednesday, Zelenskyy revealed that he had discussed the possibility of a ceasefire with US negotiators, only to have Russian forces respond with over 700 drone strikes targeting western and central Ukraine in a rare daytime attack.
Diplomatic Efforts Meet Military Escalation
"Russia is responding to the Easter ceasefire offer with Shahed drones and continues its terrorist operations against our energy sector and infrastructure," Zelenskyy stated. He emphasized that a period of silence during Easter could demonstrate that diplomacy remains a viable path forward. However, Russia's foreign ministry quickly dismissed the proposal as nothing more than a "PR stunt."
The Ukrainian president described his recent discussions with US mediators as "positive," noting that these remote talks included US special envoy Steve Witkoff, Donald Trump's son-in-law Jared Kushner, and US Senator Lindsey Graham. NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte also participated in the call, highlighting the alliance's ongoing engagement despite tensions with Washington.
Security Guarances and Territorial Disputes
Zelenskyy expressed gratitude for American efforts toward peace and confirmed that Ukrainian and US teams had agreed to strengthen a document outlining US security guarantees for any future peace agreement. "This is precisely what could pave the way for a reliable end to the war," he asserted.
In recent weeks, Zelenskyy indicated that the United States has been urging Ukraine to make concessions to expedite an end to the conflict, particularly following the US and Israel's military actions against Iran in late February. Negotiations with Russia remain deadlocked over territorial issues, with Ukraine refusing to relinquish the eastern Donbas region as demanded by Moscow.
Conflicting Claims and Civilian Casualties
Russia's defense ministry claimed on Wednesday to have achieved full control of Ukraine's Luhansk region, which forms part of the Donbas. However, Ukrainian military officials immediately denied this assertion. Viktor Tregubov, a spokesperson for Ukrainian forces, clarified that while Ukrainian troops only hold "small patches" in Luhansk, these positions have been maintained by the 3rd brigade for an extended period.
Ukrainian authorities have previously accused Russia of making false claims about military advances to influence US negotiators and create an impression of inevitable Russian victory. The Moscow-appointed head of Luhansk had announced its complete capture back in June, though Ukrainian forces have continued to resist in certain areas.
Devastating Drone Attacks Across Ukraine
Russia's drone offensive resulted in significant destruction and loss of life. Ukrainian officials reported that at least five people were killed, including four individuals in the central Cherkasy region and a woman in the frontline Kherson region. The attacks also destroyed a postal terminal in Lutsk, with Ukraine's Nova Poshta mailing company releasing images showing a warehouse engulfed in flames and thick smoke.
According to the Ukrainian air force, Russia launched 339 drones overnight followed by more than 360 additional drones during daylight hours. These strikes represent one of the most intensive drone campaigns since the conflict began, targeting both civilian infrastructure and military positions across multiple regions.
The escalation comes as the war enters its 1,499th day, with diplomatic channels remaining open but military confrontations intensifying. The international community continues to monitor the situation closely, particularly regarding US involvement in mediation efforts and the potential for future ceasefire negotiations.
