Claudia Winkleman quits chat show despite planned second series

Claudia Winkleman has decided to leave her BBC chat show, The Claudia Winkleman Show, after just one series, despite the network being prepared to commission a second season. The Traitors host announced her departure in a statement, explaining that she found the experience too nerve-wracking to continue.

Show Performance and Audience Reception

The series debuted in March 2026, featuring guests such as Rachel Zegler, James McAvoy, and Niall Horan. While critical reception was mixed, with some arguing that the former Strictly Come Dancing presenter 'slid into the background', the show performed strongly on iPlayer, with viewing figures increasing by 50% after episodes were made available on the platform. The launch episode attracted 2.5 million views in its first seven days, surpassing the 2.3 million average for Graham Norton's most recent series.

Winkleman's Statement on Departure

In her statement, Winkleman said: 'I'm incredibly grateful to the BBC for giving me the opportunity, to the guests who agreed to come and chat to me, and the production team who were simply excellent.' She added: 'Sometimes you have to try something to see how it fits, and I realised I was just too nervous to enjoy it. Maybe one day I will give it another try, but for now I already have the best jobs in the world and absolutely love the shows I'm doing.'

BBC's Support and Future Plans

A TV insider had previously indicated that the BBC was happy to proceed with a second series if Winkleman wished. The source told The Sun: 'It's understood that Beeb chiefs are poised to rubber stamp another series — if that's what Claudia wants.' Ed Havard, Director of Entertainment at the BBC, commented: 'Claudia's warmth and quick wit made The Claudia Winkleman Show an absolute joy. Whilst we loved the show, we fully respect her decision and would like to thank Claudia and the brilliant team at So Television for bringing the series to screen on the BBC.' Havard confirmed that Winkleman will return to the BBC later this year as host of The Celebrity Traitors, describing her as 'the host of the country's most-watched show'.
