A 35-year-old man has been charged in connection with the death of a nine-year-old girl who was found seriously injured at an industrial estate in Scotland. The girl, who had been camping in the area with her family, was discovered hurt at Elliot Industrial Estate in Arbroath just after midnight on Monday. She was taken to Ninewells Hospital in Dundee, where she later died.
Arrest and Charge
Police Scotland confirmed that the man, described as white British and known to the girl, was arrested and has now been charged. He is due to appear at Dundee Sheriff Court later today. The force stated that they are treating the death as suspicious but are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.
The other members of the family, who are from West Yorkshire and were camping in the area, are being supported by specialist officers, according to police. Detective Inspector Mike Ness said: 'Our thoughts remain with those affected by these events. A police presence will remain in the area while our enquiries continue.' He added that anyone with concerns or information should contact police.
Scene and Community Reaction
At the industrial estate on Monday, a blue forensic tent was set up on a grassy verge outside the Halliburton Arbroath manufacturing facility. The area was cordoned off, with two police vehicles at the scene and officers guarding the perimeter. Flowers were placed on the grass near the police line.
Lois Speed, councillor for Arbroath East and Lunan, expressed shock on social media, calling the news 'heartbreaking'. She said: 'Really just my thoughts are with the little girl and her family, and those closely affected. I don't have much more that I can add or say, other than just express the shock and sympathies with everyone.'
Local resident Dawn Reid visited the estate to lay flowers and said: 'We're quite devastated by the news. Our kids are just not safe anywhere, it's just heartbreaking.' She added: 'I just wish them all the best. She's got a long road ahead of her that poor mum. Devastated for her, there's no need for it.'
