A 51-year-old man has been found guilty of first-degree murder for fatally shooting a woman who attempted to rescue her husband during an armed confrontation over a stolen motorcycle in Oildale, California. Luis Villachana now faces up to 74 years in prison, according to prosecutors.
Confrontation over stolen motorcycle
The incident began on the morning of August 29, 2024, when Villachana discovered his motorcycle had been stolen from his home. Instead of contacting police, the convicted felon enlisted two other people to help him find it. Their search led them to a house in Oildale, where Villachana found the missing motorcycle inside the garage. He entered the property and confronted a roommate, demanding to know who had stolen his bike. When the roommate did not answer, Villachana assaulted him, prosecutors said.
Another roommate contacted his parents about the confrontation. The father went to the house to calm the situation, but Villachana fired a gun toward the man's feet. The father then assaulted Villachana as the confrontation escalated and fled from the house. Villachana fired again, striking and injuring him.
Woman killed while trying to rescue husband
After learning of the situation, 44-year-old Ruth Ann Cummings drove to the property in an SUV in an attempt to rescue her husband. Prosecutors said Villachana threatened to kill Cummings, her husband, and their daughter. 'I'm gonna smoke all you guys,' Villachana said before opening fire, according to court papers. His shots struck the SUV and fatally wounded Cummings. She died later from her injuries.
Villachana fled after the shooting and remained at large for more than a week before being arrested in Shafter. A jury convicted him of Cummings' murder, as well as burglary and attempted murder, following a trial in Kern County.
Sentencing and district attorney's statement
Villachana faces up to 50 years to life in prison for the murder, plus an additional 24 years and four months for the other convictions. He is due to be sentenced on August 14. Kern County District Attorney Cynthia Zimmer said: 'Villachana's actions were avoidable and entirely unjustified.' The verdict also covered the attack on Cummings' husband and Villachana's entry into the house.
