A powerful car explosion has shaken the Indian capital, resulting in multiple fatalities near one of Delhi's most iconic landmarks. The blast occurred close to the historic Red Fort, sending emergency services rushing to the scene.

Several fire engines were dispatched immediately after the explosion was reported near a gate of the Red Fort metro station, according to the city's fire services. Sanjay Tyagi, a spokesperson for the Delhi police, confirmed the tragic human cost, stating that at least eight people were killed and several others sustained injuries in the incident.
The force of the explosion triggered a significant fire that damaged multiple vehicles parked in the vicinity. Local media footage from the site showed severely damaged vehicles and a substantial police cordon established around the area as investigations commenced.

One local resident provided a chilling account to the NDTV broadcaster, describing how he heard a deafening, "window-shattering sound" before witnessing flames engulf several vehicles. The cause of the explosion remains unclear at this early stage.
"We are investigating the cause of the blast," stated police spokesperson Sanjay Tyagi, emphasising that the priority is to determine the origin of the devastating incident. The Red Fort, a former imperial palace and major tourist attraction, was the dramatic backdrop to this tragic event, though the explosion occurred outside its premises.
