A teenage nursery worker has been sentenced to 15 years in a young offender institution for a series of horrific sexual offences, including rape, against boys as young as three years old.
Betrayal of Trust in a Place of Safety
Thomas Waller, 18, exploited his position of trust at the nursery to be alone with the young victims. The court heard that his duties, which included taking children to the toilet and helping them get changed, provided him with the opportunity to carry out the abuse.
Guildford Crown Court was told how Waller systematically gained the trust of the two boys before subjecting them to sexual exploitation. The details of the case were described as deeply distressing.
A Heartbreaking Sentencing
Sentencing Waller on Friday 14 November 2025, Judge Claire Harden-Frost stated it was "heartbreaking" to witness the victims' parents, who were left feeling responsible for what had occurred.
Waller was found guilty following a trial at Staines Youth Court earlier this year. His convictions included:
- Rape
- Two counts of causing or inciting sexual activity
- Taking indecent photographs
He received a 15-year sentence, of which he must serve 10 years in detention. The remaining five years will be served on licence upon his release.
The Lasting Impact on a Young Life
The profound damage caused by Waller's actions was laid bare in a victim impact statement from one of the boy's fathers. He revealed that his son had "gathered a collection of memories that I would never wish on a human being", a poignant testament to the long-term psychological trauma inflicted.
This case has sent shockwaves through the community, highlighting the vulnerability of children and the paramount importance of safeguarding in early years settings.
