Commuters across London are facing severe disruption on the London Underground after an extreme heat warning triggered delays on 12 different lines. Transport for London (TfL) has issued delay warnings as rush-hour travellers attempt to get home amid the scorching conditions.
Train Derailment in East Sussex
Earlier today, a train derailed near Lewes rail station in East Sussex, forcing the closure of several rail lines. Police, fire crews, and ambulances were called to the scene just after 3:30pm. National Rail has stated that major delays are expected until 10pm as a result of the incident.
The derailment adds to the travel chaos caused by the heatwave, which has already put pressure on the UK's road network. Commuters had been advised 'not to travel' earlier due to forecasts of 38°C temperatures.
Extreme Heat Warning and Health Alerts
The Met Office has issued an extreme amber heat warning, active until midnight, as the fifth heatwave of the year continues. London, the southeast, east of England, and the East Midlands are expected to bear the brunt, with high temperatures persisting for the rest of the week.
Heat health alerts are also in place across all of England, as the temperatures are likely to affect wellbeing, particularly among vulnerable people. The alerts cover the entire country, highlighting the widespread impact of the heat.
