Ex-Forces Stars Battle Arctic Ultra in New Channel 4 Mental Health Documentary
SAS veterans tackle Arctic Ultra for mental health film

A new Channel 4 documentary follows four elite former military personnel as they undertake one of the world's most gruelling physical challenges, with the aim of sparking a vital conversation about men's mental health.

The Ultimate Arctic Endurance Test

The film, titled 'Arctic Adventure: Ultimate Survival', tracks Jason 'Foxy' Fox, Aldo Kane, Brian Wood, and Karl Hinett. In March 2025, the team embarked on 'Project Fire and Ice', a 500-kilometre ultra-marathon across the frozen landscapes of Swedish Lapland. Their mission was to complete the journey in just ten days, battling temperatures as low as -25°C while skiing and hiking for up to 18 hours daily, each carrying 45kg of equipment.

Beyond the extreme physical exertion, the documentary captures the participants' raw and open discussions about their personal battles with combat trauma, mental health struggles, and the journey towards resilience. The programme carries a trigger warning for its frank conversations on these topics and suicide.

Breaking the Silence on Mental Health

The core of the film is its powerful focus on dismantling the stigma surrounding mental health, particularly among men and within the military community. Jason Fox emphasised the importance of this dialogue, stating the challenge was unforgettable not just for the terrain, but for spotlighting men's mental health and suicide prevention.

"I'm immensely proud of the team for having the courage to open up about their own struggles," Fox said. "But even prouder of the precedent they've set for others to talk about mental health and seek support when they need it."

Julie McCarthy, Director of Welfare Operations at the Armed Forces charity SSAFA, praised the honesty shown by the four 'tough guys'. She highlighted that stigma remains a major stumbling block, especially for military men, and that sharing struggles is the first step to finding crucial support.

Fundraising Success and Broadcast Details

The arduous expedition had a significant charitable goal: raising funds for SSAFA, which provides lifelong support to serving personnel, veterans, and their families. The 'Project Fire and Ice' challenge has successfully raised an impressive £190,000 to date.

Channel 4's Commissioning Editor, Jonah Weston, called male suicide and mental health in the UK an "unsung scandal", adding that the documentary sends a powerful message that "suffering in silence is a killer. Connection saves lives."

The documentary is scheduled to air on Channel 4 on Monday, 19th January at 10pm, directly after an episode of SAS: Who Dares Wins. For those affected by the themes, support is available via SSAFA's Forcesline and the Samaritans.
