A 37-year-old man is fighting for his life after a 'shocking and brutal' stabbing in Balham on Saturday evening, July 18. The attack occurred on Weir Road, a predominantly residential area near Clapham Park, at approximately 7.35pm. The victim was repeatedly knifed before members of the public intervened.
Public chase and police response
Witnesses chased the male suspect away from the injured man while he was still armed, according to the Metropolitan Police. Officers arrived at the scene and provided first aid before paramedics rushed the victim to hospital. He remains in critical condition, the force confirmed in a statement on Sunday afternoon.
Detective Superintendent Gareth Gilbert, leading the investigation, said: "This was a shocking and brutal attack, carried out in broad daylight on a residential street. Our officers are working quickly to identify and arrest the attacker and it is imperative that anyone with information should come forward immediately."
Community reassurance and ongoing investigation
Gilbert added: "We recognise this incident will be deeply disturbing to the local community and want to reassure residents that they can expect to see an increased number of officers in the area over the coming days. We would also like to pay tribute to the members of the public who bravely chased the suspect away from the scene while he was still armed."
Police shut Weir Road in both directions between Cavendish Road and Molly Huggins Close while the scene was secured. The cordon has since been removed. Enquiries to identify and locate the male knifeman are ongoing.
