Coronation Street star Sally Dynevor has revealed that she would play her character Sally Metcalfe's breast cancer storyline differently now, following her own real-life diagnosis. The actress, who has played the iconic role since 1986, shared her reflections in a recent interview.
A Personal Journey Mirrors Fiction
In 2009, Sally Dynevor was diagnosed with breast cancer at the age of 46, on the same day she filmed a scene where her character confided her diagnosis to husband Kevin Webster (played by Michael Le Vell). The emotional scene aired on Christmas Day 2009. Now, looking back, Dynevor admits her portrayal would change based on her personal experience.
“I think there are moments in the show that, like the breast cancer storyline, which, if I went back, I think I would have done very differently,” she told Prima magazine. “In the sense that because I got it myself, I realised what it was like to go through breast cancer and how much you hide your pain from people you love.”
She added, “I think I didn’t play it that way. I played it that Sally was very emotional and upset, and I think that now I would have gone back and played it completely differently because real-life experiences make you go, ‘Ah, I shouldn’t have done that, I shouldn’t have done this.’”
Life on the Cobbles Continues
Despite her regrets, Dynevor praised the show and expressed no desire to retire. “When you love what you do, why would you want to retire?” she asked. The actress continues to be a central figure in Weatherfield, recently involved in organising Carla and Lisa Connor-Swain’s wedding reception, played by Alison King and Vicky Myers.
In the past year, her character Sally has been part of a fostering storyline, taking in the Michaelis children after their parents were imprisoned. She has also been helping her on-screen husband Tim Metcalfe (Joe Duttine) recognise that a childhood relationship was actually grooming, a theme underscored by the exposure of Megan Walsh’s abuse of Will Driscoll.
A Legacy of Storytelling
Sally Metcalfe has been involved in numerous major plots, including domestic abuse and her cancer battle. Her character also ran for mayor and has been a strong ally for the LGBTQ+ community. Dynevor’s candid reflection highlights how real-life experiences can deepen an actor’s understanding of their role.
Fans can look forward to more from the beloved character as Dynevor shows no signs of stepping away from the cobbles. The actress’s honesty about her portrayal offers a rare glimpse into the intersection of personal and professional life in the world of soap operas.
