Killer given 42-year sentence after murdering pregnant ex-girlfriend weeks after prison release
Killer gets 42 years for murdering pregnant ex

A man described by a judge as "exceptionally dangerous" has been sentenced to life in prison with a minimum term of 42 years for murdering his pregnant ex-girlfriend just weeks after being released from custody.

Kane Patton, 30, was convicted of murdering 28-year-old Jodie Taggart, who was 12 weeks pregnant with his child, in a brutal attack at her Manchester home in February 2025.

Violent history and missed warnings

The court heard how Patton had been released from prison in January after serving time for assaulting a previous partner. Despite his violent history and Ms Taggart's repeated reports to police about his harassment, Patton was able to carry out what the judge called a "sustained and brutal" attack.

Ms Taggart had ended the relationship after discovering her pregnancy, telling friends she feared for her safety. In the weeks leading to her death, she had reported Patton's threatening behaviour to Greater Manchester Police on multiple occasions.

A life cut tragically short

Jodie Taggart was described by her family as a "vibrant, caring young woman" who was excited about becoming a mother. Her family spoke of their devastation at losing both Jodie and her unborn child, saying the sentence would never bring back their "beautiful daughter."

Detective Chief Inspector Sarah Jones, who led the investigation, said: "This was a horrific crime that robbed a young woman of her life and her family of their future together. Our thoughts remain with Jodie's loved ones."

System failures under scrutiny

The case has raised serious questions about the management of high-risk offenders and the protection of domestic abuse victims. The probation service is now conducting an urgent review of Patton's case management following his recent release.

Domestic violence charities have called for improved safeguards, noting that women are at greatest risk when leaving abusive relationships.
