EastEnders fans are fearing that beloved character Denise Fox may be leaving the show following a combination of a heartbreaking cancer storyline and a poignant 20th anniversary tribute from the BBC.
Denise Fox's Cancer Diagnosis
Diane Parish, who has played Denise Fox since 2006, is set to embark on a challenging storyline where her character is diagnosed with acute myeloid leukaemia. The diagnosis comes after Denise experiences concerning health symptoms, including fatigue. The storyline, developed in consultation with Blood Cancer UK, will explore the impact of the diagnosis on Denise and her loved ones throughout the rest of the year.
20th Anniversary Celebration
To mark Diane Parish's 20th anniversary on the show, the BBC EastEnders Instagram account shared a compilation of Denise's most iconic moments. The post received an outpouring of love from fellow soap stars. Tameka Empson, who plays Kim Fox, wrote: 'Happy 20th Anniversary Diane. It has been a honour to watch and work with you for some of it. Love and respect to you always my big sis, from your little sis. Here's your flowers.' Ricky Norwood, known for playing Fatboy, added: 'What a legacy!! Denise for 20 more. Sending big love.' Balvinder Sopal (Suki Panesar-Unwin) commented: 'Iconic behaviour,' and Zaraah Abrahams (Chelsea Fox) said: 'Unreal!! Happy Anniversary!!'
Diane herself responded to the tribute, writing: 'Oh. Thats done me. Thank you for the blessing of being part of the greatest show and a member of the best family a workplace has to offer.' This heartfelt message, combined with the cancer storyline, has sparked fears among fans that Denise may be leaving Albert Square.

Behind the Storyline
EastEnders has worked closely with Blood Cancer UK to ensure the storyline is portrayed accurately and sensitively. Helen Rowntree, CEO of Blood Cancer UK, said: 'It's been a privilege advising the EastEnders team to ensure Denise's storyline reflects the real experiences of people living with blood cancer and those who care for them. Blood cancers, which include leukaemia, lymphoma and myeloma, do not discriminate yet experiences and outcomes can vary significantly, including by ethnicity. Being Black and living with an aggressive blood cancer like acute myeloid leukaemia can bring additional challenges. We hope viewers gain a greater understanding of blood cancer's impact and we're pleased this issue is being highlighted on a powerful platform, helping make a “hidden” cancer more visible.'
Executive producer Ben Wadey added: 'It was vital to us that Denise's storyline is portrayed with sensitivity and care, and we're grateful to Blood Cancer UK for their advice in helping us tell this story accurately. As viewers follow Denise, we hope to shine a light on the realities and challenges of an acute myeloid leukaemia diagnosis and the impact it has on the person affected and those around them.'
