EastEnders: Denise's Half-Brother Darnell Debuts Amid Donor Crisis
EastEnders: Denise's Half-Brother Darnell Debuts

Denise Fox's long-lost half-brother Darnell Larson makes his EastEnders debut next week, but his arrival could prove pivotal in her fight against acute myeloid leukaemia, as the family desperately seeks a stem cell donor. The BBC soap introduced the character, played by Christopher Colquhoun, amid Denise's ongoing blood cancer storyline, which began with her diagnosis in May.

Denise's daughters, Chelsea Fox (Zaraah Abrahams) and Libby Fox (Belinda Owusu), have already been ruled out as suitable matches, prompting the family to organize a donor drive at the community centre. However, their hopes are dashed when Denise's condition deteriorates, leading doctors to place her in a medically induced coma.

A Glimmer of Hope from an Ancestry Website

With the stakes higher than ever, a breakthrough emerges when the family discovers a missed lead on an ancestry website, revealing that Denise has a half-brother she never knew about. Kim Fox (Tameka Empson) and Jack Branning (Scott Maslen) launch frantic searches to track Darnell down, and when they finally locate him, he agrees to meet them, unaware of the true reason for their outreach.

Christopher Colquhoun, who plays Darnell, shared insights into his character's initial reaction: 'Darnell is simply excited to discover a side of his family he never knew existed. He's naturally open and trusting, so he doesn't spend time questioning why they've reached out to him. He wants to get to know them and, in typical Darnell fashion, almost loses sight of the bigger picture because he's so fascinated by the connection itself and doesn't even question why Denise isn't there.'

Overwhelmed by the Truth

When the truth about Denise's illness is finally revealed, Darnell is left reeling. Although he eventually agrees to visit his newfound half-sister, the experience proves overwhelming, prompting a hasty exit. Colquhoun explained: 'He's not angry about being misled. Instead, he's overwhelmed by the enormity of the situation, especially having only just learned Denise exists. As the story develops, we also begin to understand why hospitals are such a difficult and triggering environment for him.'

Meanwhile, Denise is brought out of her coma, offering a moment of relief. But the joy is short-lived as doctors inform the family that her treatment is not working as hoped, making the search for a stem cell donor even more urgent.

Jack's Determination Meets Darnell's Resistance

Jack becomes increasingly determined to persuade Darnell to help, but Colquhoun warns that his character 'doesn't respond well to pressure or aggression.' He elaborated: 'When he's pushed, his instinct is to withdraw rather than fight back. That leaves Jack in a difficult position because Darnell represents a rare source of hope for Denise and the family – it's all or nothing for them at this point.'

With emotions running high, those closest to Denise fear they may have lost their biggest chance after Jack returns to the hospital with bad news. However, Darnell and his daughter Grace (Krysstina Frempong) are set to appear in more scenes in the coming weeks, leaving viewers to wonder if he might have a change of heart.

EastEnders airs these scenes from Monday 24th August at 7.30pm on BBC One, or stream first from 6am on iPlayer.
