Bonnie Tyler, the 74-year-old Welsh singer known for hits like 'Total Eclipse of the Heart,' reportedly had to be resuscitated after going into cardiac arrest while hospitalized in Portugal. According to Portuguese publication Correio da Manha, her condition worsened following life-saving surgery for a burst appendix.
Current Medical Status
Bonnie remains in an induced coma in the intensive care unit at Faro Hospital as doctors work to control a serious infection caused by a perforated intestine. Her long-time friend Liberto Mealha stated that doctors are 'positive' about her chances of a full recovery, despite the uncertainty surrounding her condition.
Details of the Emergency
Mealha, who first met the singer in the 1980s when he opened a nightclub near her holiday home in Albufeira, provided further details. Bonnie began feeling unwell during a concert in London and consulted a doctor, but tests revealed nothing. She then traveled to the Algarve, where she experienced severe abdominal pain. Two days later, she was taken to a private hospital and urgently transferred to Faro Hospital after her appendix burst.
Reports indicate that Bonnie first felt unwell about a month ago and was bedridden for two days at her Algarve home before her husband, Robert Sullivan, took her to the private hospital. A spokesperson confirmed on Thursday that she was placed in an induced coma to 'aid her recovery' following the burst appendix.
Family and Fan Support
The spokesperson earlier stated: 'We are very sorry to announce that Bonnie has been admitted to hospital in Faro, Portugal, where she has a home, for emergency intestinal surgery. The surgery went well and she is now recuperating. We know that all of her family, friends and fans will be concerned about this news and will be wishing her well for a full and swift recovery.'
Bonnie, who has had multiple Top Ten hits and represented the UK at Eurovision in 2013, is believed to have been rushed to hospital on April 30. Sources say she had been active despite persistent pain for weeks. Mealha added that her husband remains by her bedside daily, grateful to the medical team and believing that if Bonnie had stayed in the UK, she might not have survived.
