Passengers from the hantavirus-affected cruise ship MV Hondius arrived at Eindhoven air base in the Netherlands on Tuesday morning, Australian time, on the first leg of a complex repatriation mission. The flight, organized by Australia, carried four Australian passengers, one permanent resident, and one New Zealand citizen, along with a British passenger. They were greeted by Australian Ambassador Greg Fench at a safe distance.
Quarantine Plans in Australia
Upon returning to Australia, the passengers will undergo a 42-day quarantine, starting with three weeks at the Centre for National Resilience in Bullsbrook, near Perth. Health Minister Mark Butler described the mission as “difficult” and noted that the flight crew will also need to quarantine either in Australia or at their home base abroad.
Health Status and Risks
Butler confirmed that all passengers are in “good health and relatively good spirits,” but additional hantavirus cases, including a French national in critical condition, highlight the ongoing risk. The World Health Organization recommends a 42-day quarantine due to the virus’s long incubation period, which can lead to flu-like symptoms and, in severe cases, respiratory arrest and death.
Logistics and Support
The passengers will spend up to 48 hours in the Netherlands before a charter flight brings them to Australia, likely landing at RAAF Base Pearce. Medical personnel from the National Critical Care and Trauma Response Centre in Darwin will staff the quarantine facility. Butler emphasized that Australia’s quarantine measures are among the strictest globally, with most countries requiring only two to three days of centralized quarantine.
Background on the Outbreak
Oceanwide Expeditions confirmed that all guests and some crew from the MV Hondius have been repatriated. Twenty-five crew members remain on board, along with the body of a German guest who died on May 2. The Australian government listed hantavirus under the Biosecurity Act to enforce quarantine orders, ensuring no risk to the broader community.
