Parents Plead Guilty After Daughter Found Emaciated in Squalid Bedroom
When emergency responders arrived at the home of Alan and Bernita Davies on May 26, 2023, the overwhelming odor emanating from their daughter's ground-floor bedroom immediately signaled tragedy. Paramedics discovered 32-year-old Steffie Davies beneath a duvet, her body described as almost skeletal with severe pressure sores and deformed hands from extreme immobility.
Medical Neglect Leads to Fatal Sepsis
Steffie, who stood five foot seven inches tall, weighed only five stone nine pounds at her death. A pathologist determined she died from sepsis caused by infected pressure ulcers, extremely low body weight, and poor nutritional status. Prosecuting attorney Andrew Jones KC stated in court, She had been left in a terrible state to die.
The court heard that ulcers on Steffie's body had been present for at least six weeks, though the exact time of death could not be established. Despite her mother claiming to have seen her reading or sleeping in the days before calling emergency services, evidence suggested Steffie had likely been deceased much longer.
Family History and Emotional Impact
In a heartbreaking statement, Steffie's sister described how her sibling had shown promise studying animal care in college but struggled with increasing anxiety that made leaving the house difficult. With the right support and encouragement from my mum and dad, she could have done so much with her life, the sister said. Instead, she was left to fade into insignificance in the most inhumane way possible.
The sister, who had been estranged from her parents for years, added that no sentence could ever atone for what happened. Distressing photographs of Steffie's injuries were withheld from court proceedings to preserve her dignity in death, according to Mrs Justice Stacey.
Legal Proceedings and Parental Admissions
Alan and Bernita Davies, both 60 years old, pleaded guilty to causing or allowing the death of their vulnerable daughter, who rarely left their home due to anxiety. They had initially faced charges of gross negligence manslaughter before their pleas to the lesser charge were accepted earlier this year.
During the 999 call made by Bernita Davies around 8:30 a.m. on May 26, 2023, she could be heard crying as she told the operator her daughter was cold and like a skeleton. Both parents declined to comment during police interviews.
Defense Arguments and Sentencing
Defense attorney Maria Masselis, representing Bernita Davies, acknowledged her client's failure to provide adequate care, stating, That's a responsibility that will stay with her for the rest of her life. Simon Rogers, defending Alan Davies, emphasized there was no malevolence toward Steffie but acknowledged that inaction led to her death.
The couple, together for 34 years with three children and an 18-month-old grandchild they maintain contact with, faced sentencing following their guilty pleas. The case highlights tragic consequences of neglect toward vulnerable adults with mental health challenges.
