The Guardian's Filter team assembled five testers to evaluate 15 body lotions over three weeks, with Nivea Shea Nourish Body Lotion emerging as the best overall pick. The comprehensive test covered everything from hydration and texture to scent and packaging, with input from three licensed dermatologists.
How the Testing Worked
Before testing began, the team consulted three board-certified dermatologists: Dr James Wang, double board-certified dermatologist and dermatopathologist and founder of Metropolis Dermatology in Los Angeles; Dr Melanie Palm, board-certified dermatologist and cosmetic surgeon at Art of Skin MD in Solana Beach, California; and Dr Carina Woodruff, dermatologist at the Epiphany Skin Allergy Institute and assistant professor at Texas A&M.
Five testers, ranging in age from their 20s to their 60s, used at least one lotion daily and recorded their experiences through detailed surveys. They evaluated packaging, moisturizing effectiveness, texture, scent, absorption, effects on skin conditions, and overall value. All products were provided as samples by the companies and will be donated after testing.
The Best Overall and Scented Options
Nivea Shea Nourish Body Lotion, priced at $4.99 at CVS, impressed testers with its hydrating formula containing shea butter and hyaluronic acid. Most testers reported feeling moisturized for 12 hours or more, and several said they planned to repurchase. However, one tester found the floral fragrance too strong for daily use, and another noted the bottle's soft plastic construction was less sturdy than competitors.
EOS Shea Better 24H Moisture Body Lotion won the best scented category at $9.97. Testers gave near-perfect scent ratings across different varieties, with one describing the Pomegranate Raspberry option as "very good, clean" and another comparing the Creme de Pistachio scent to "pistachio ice-cream." One tester purchased the product independently before the test concluded. However, external reviews mentioned issues with pump malfunctions and the product being unsuitable for extremely dry skin.
Top Performers for Hydration and Specific Needs
Eucerin Advanced Repair Body Lotion, at $13.69, was ranked best for moisturizing. Testers praised its smooth application and luxurious feel, with all reporting at least eight hours of hydration. The formula relies on ceramide 3, alpha-hydroxy acid (AHA), and urea. Despite being fragrance-free, every tester agreed it smelled medicinal, which dermatologists attributed to the natural scent of urea and certain AHAs.
Jergens Skin Firming Body Lotion, priced at $7.47, won best anti-ageing. Testers loved its creamy, silky texture and fast absorption, with effects lasting over eight hours. Dr Palm cautioned that the firming effects are temporary: "A lotion can improve hydration and temporarily improve skin texture, but it's not going to provide a significant firming effect that lasts."
Palmer's Cocoa Butter Formula Daily Skin Therapy Body Lotion, at $6.69, was the unanimous budget pick. Testers described the scent as a "sweet chocolate smell" or "fresh baked cookie" and reported over 12 hours of hydration. The main complaint was the pump, which several testers found difficult to operate.
Luxury, Sensitive Skin, and Clean Formulas
Naturium Skin-Renewing Retinol Body Lotion, at $25.99, offered a luxurious gel-like texture that testers described as "silky" and "lightweight." Dr Wang noted retinols can be irritating and require SPF use. One tester reported mild itchiness, and scent critiques ranged from "neutral" to "funky smell like sour milk."
CeraVe Daily Moisturizing Lotion, at $14.97, was best for sensitive skin. Dr Woodruff praised it: "Some of the best products are really just very utilitarian products that are basic." Testers appreciated its high absorption and low greasiness, though it was deemed unsuitable for very dry skin.
SkinFix Barrier+ Lipid-Boost Body Cream, at $33.60, was the best body butter, providing over 12 hours of hydration. Testers liked its thick, buttery texture and spa-like packaging, but found it too expensive at $48 retail. Lubriderm Daily Moisture Lotion Fragrance-Free, at $11.89, scored high for fast absorption and packaging, though one tester experienced skin irritation around jewelry.
Vanicream Moisturizing Lotion, at $13.59, was the best clean ingredient formula. It is free of dyes, fragrances, lanolin, parabens, formaldehyde releasers, essential oils, and plant extracts, and has a 5-star rating from the National Eczema Association. Dr Woodruff noted, "Vanicream is very hypoallergenic but sometimes feels a bit basic." One tester called it the "literal worst lotion of the bunch," citing insufficient moisturizing and outdated packaging.
Additional Options and Final Considerations
Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion, at $9.97, tested positively with half the group willing to repurchase, but one tester reported less than two hours of moisture and itchiness. La Roche-Posay Lipikar Balm AP+M Triple Repair, at $18.99, was a moisture powerhouse lasting over 12 hours, but most testers found it too expensive. Other products tested included Native Moisturizing Lotion, Hempz Body Lotion Age Defying, and Kiehl's Ultra Body Mega Moisture Squalane Cream.
The testing revealed that while fragrance and packaging influence choice, the most important factor is finding a lotion that genuinely benefits the skin. Consumers should consider their specific skin type and needs when selecting a product, and those with sensitive skin should look for hypoallergenic options as recommended by dermatologists.
