Woman Arrested Over Death of Autistic Girl, 7, Found in Golf Course Pond
A woman has been arrested in connection with the tragic death of a seven-year-old autistic girl who was discovered unresponsive in a pond on a golf course. The incident, which has sent shockwaves through the local community, occurred in South Yorkshire and has led to a significant police investigation.
Details of the Arrest and Investigation
South Yorkshire Police confirmed on Friday that a woman in her 30s has been taken into custody on suspicion of gross negligence manslaughter and child neglect. She has since been released on bail pending further inquiries. The arrest follows the death of Nyla May Bradshaw, who was found in a pond at Owston Golf Course, north of Doncaster, on March 30.
Detective Chief Inspector Gary Magnay stated that while initial inquiries suggested the circumstances were not suspicious, the investigation has been intensified. "Our officers have been working hard to establish the full circumstances surrounding Nyla's death," he said. "These ongoing inquiries have ultimately led us to make this arrest and further our investigation in relation to the events leading up to the incident."
Circumstances of the Tragedy
An inquest opening earlier this month revealed that Nyla was a non-verbal seven-year-old girl diagnosed with autism. According to coroner's officer Jane McDonnell, Nyla was under the care of a childminder on the day of the incident. "During the course of the day, she was taken out to a park in the Owston area of Doncaster," McDonnell explained. "She passed through a gap in the fence and approached woodland close to Owston Golf Course."
After the childminder alerted police and Nyla's family, a search was launched. The girl was found face down and unresponsive in a pond on the golf course. She was rushed to the hospital but could not be resuscitated, as heard in court.
Community Impact and Police Appeal
DCI Magnay emphasized the profound emotional toll of Nyla's death. "The heart-breaking loss of Nyla May has had a huge emotional impact – not just on her family, friends, and loved ones, but on the wider community," he said. "Nyla May's family continues to be in the forefront of our thoughts as our work progresses, and we will continue to support them throughout this awful time."
With the case now active, police have urged the public to refrain from speculation. "Nothing must be published by anyone, including members of the public, which could threaten the integrity of any future court proceedings," Magnay cautioned. "I'd urge the public to not speculate about the incident, including on social media, and respect the privacy of all those affected."
The investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to uncover the full details leading to this devastating event.
