Sandra Bullock grieved Bryan Randall for four years before ALS death

Sandra Bullock has spoken publicly for the first time about her late partner, Bryan Randall, revealing she had been grieving him for four years before his death from ALS at age 57 in August 2023. The 62-year-old actress shared her experience on the Smartless podcast, explaining that Randall had asked her not to disclose his illness, which left her feeling isolated.

Grieving before the loss

Bullock, who was with Randall for eight years, said she was 'grieving Bryan four years before he passed.' She noted that around half of ALS patients receive a three-year prognosis, though some live longer. 'There was something that had shifted,' she said. 'My person left a lot earlier than the body left. I don't think I ever dealt with that until after he passed, because you're just on this treadmill.'

The actress confirmed Randall's death in August 2023 with 'great sadness' but had not spoken about the loss in depth until now. She revealed that his diagnosis came almost simultaneously with the COVID-19 pandemic, compounding her stress. 'I have a child with severe asthma, I was panicking,' the Practical Magic star recalled. 'I had two young kids, that were navigating it, especially a little girl who saw him as a father figure… I wasn't allowed to tell anybody. My sister was the only one who knew for a while. It's a huge weight.'

Keeping the illness private

Bullock explained that Randall had asked her not to share his diagnosis publicly. 'I know why he asked me not to,' she said on the podcast, but admitted that it had 'isolated her in the process.' She eventually told close friend Jennifer Aniston, as well as Amanda Anaka, the wife of Smartless host Jason Bateman.

Randall died three years after being diagnosed with ALS, a motor neuron disease that causes progressive paralysis. The couple had been together since 2015, when they met during a photoshoot for Bullock's son Louis, whom she adopted in 2010. They also shared Bullock's adopted daughter Laila, 12, and Randall's adult daughter Skylar from a previous relationship.

Scattering ashes and final tribute

In January 2024, Bullock was seen scattering Randall's ashes in the Bahamas, a location significant to the couple. An insider said at the time that after meeting in 2015, they exchanged informal 'vows' there in 2017 and frequently took family holidays to the area. Her sister, Gesine Bullock-Prado, confirmed in an Instagram video that Randall was also scattered on the banks of the Snake River in Wyoming. On what would have been his 58th birthday, she posted: 'Happy birthday, Bry. Sandy brought you to the river, just as she promised.'

Shortly after Randall's death, Bullock was reported to be 'grateful' for the support she received and 'happy' that people had donated to ALS charities. An insider told People at the time: 'It was very important to her that when she and his family made the initial statement of Bryan's passing, those who were on this journey with her and Bryan, from the beginning, were recognised.'
