A two-year-old pitbull who ran away from home survived two days in a dim San Francisco railway tunnel before being rescued, according to the San Francisco animal care and control shelter.
Rescue After Two Days
Caltrain operators first spotted the pup, named Roo, on his first day in the tunnel. Seeing the dog's unmoving body, they assumed he had been fatally struck by a train, as detailed in a recent social media post from the shelter.
On the second day, after Roo was seen moving, police officers entered the tunnel on foot with flashlights. They found Roo curled up next to a rail track and led him out into the daylight.
Reunion with Owner
“He was terrified at first, then was thrilled to be rescued,” the shelter wrote in the post. Roo, a recent adoptee, had run away after being “spooked.” Fortunately, he was microchipped, allowing his owner to be contacted, and he has since been reunited.
Community Support for Dogs
The San Francisco area has recently rallied around other dogs in distress. Menlo Park firefighters also rescued a missing dog found swimming in the San Francisco Bay, with seagulls following in pursuit.
