Officials advised anyone encountering the animal to slowly back away and maintain a safe distance. Angela Yip, a spokesperson for Animal Care and Control, confirmed that teams were working to capture the mountain lion safely, emphasising there was no immediate threat to the public but requesting people stay away from the area.
The capture involved coordinated efforts between Animal Care and Control workers, San Francisco police officers, and state wildlife officials. The mountain lion was eventually located near Lafayette Park, where it had scaled a wall and entered the green space, according to witness accounts.
Rare Urban Sighting Prompts Community Alert
The mountain lion was first reported on Monday morning by a San Francisco resident, Madrey Hilton, who captured video footage of the animal and alerted authorities. "It was so big ... not just a regular cat," Hilton told the San Francisco Chronicle, describing how the lion "just looked like it was minding its own business" before moving into the park.
While coyotes are commonly seen in San Francisco's many parks, mountain lion sightings within the city remain unusual. However, this is not the first instance of cougars venturing into urban areas. In 2020, another young mountain lion was found sleeping in a planter box along a busy downtown street and later safely captured and released back into the wild.
