The Laboratory Spa and Health Club in Muswell Hill has completed a £1.5 million redevelopment of its poolside facilities, introducing a recovery and thermal suite alongside its existing 25-metre pool.
The North London club, located on The Avenue just off the Broadway, has been part of the local community since 1992. The latest investment focuses on the wet side of the building, where the pool now sits alongside a newly built recovery area.
New Ice Lounge and thermal suite
At the centre of the refurbishment is a new Ice Lounge, featuring a Brass Monkey Pro ice bath and a Scandinavia Thermo Aspen sauna. A two-tiered steam room completes the sequence, allowing members to alternate between hot and cold in the Nordic bathing tradition.
The pool, which is 1.2 metres deep throughout, remains the anchor of the facility. Around it, the club has added amenities that would not be out of place in a dedicated recovery studio.
Wider club facilities
The wider offer remains broad. Alongside the gym and pool, members have access to spa baths, group fitness classes, personal training, a juice bar, and a private garden that is popular in warmer months. Day spa treatments are available through a separate spa reception on 020 8482 4000.
Membership options include full, flexible, joint, annual, young professional, and student categories, with family add-ons available. Monthly subscriptions are typically collected by direct debit, and annual memberships can be paid up front. Prospective members are encouraged to tour the building before signing up.
Club operations and booking rules
Class bookings run through the members' system and can be made up to a week in advance. Published rules limit members to one class booking per day, a detail that reflects the busy timetable, particularly in early mornings and after work.
The club is open from 7am to 10pm on weekdays and from 8am to 9pm on weekends and bank holidays, closing only on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
The Laboratory operates two other London sites, in Mill Hill and Clerkenwell, but Muswell Hill remains the original. More than three decades on, it continues to offer the same combination of swimming, workouts, and quiet relaxation under one roof.
