Sutton United Beat Truro City 1-0 to Reach FA Cup First Round

Sutton United progressed to the first round proper of the FA Cup on Saturday afternoon with a 1-0 victory over Truro City in the fourth qualifying round. The win marks the second consecutive season that the U's have reached this stage of the competition, having made it to the second round last year before being eliminated by Shrewsbury Town in extra time.

Contrasting Form Ahead of the Clash

The two sides entered the cup tie with differing momentum. Sutton had won only once in their previous six matches, with that sole victory coming against West Bromwich Albion U21 in the National League Cup. In contrast, Truro City arrived at the match sitting fourth in the National League South, just one point from the top of the table and unbeaten in their last four games.

Babalola and Osadebe Combine for the Opener

The first half was largely uneventful until midway through, when Sutton nearly broke the deadlock. Jermaine Francis delivered a deep corner to the back post, where Temi Babalola met the ball with his head but could only glance it wide of the goal.

Ten minutes later, Sutton did find the opener. Babalola, with his back to goal, showed strength to hold up play before laying the ball off to Emmanuel Osadebe on the edge of the box. The midfielder, responding to shouts of “shoot” from the crowd, fired the ball into the bottom left corner to give Sutton a 1-0 lead at halftime.

Truro's Pressure and Brits' Key Save

Truro City enjoyed their best spell of the match shortly after the interval, putting Sutton goalkeeper Spike Brits under considerable pressure during a positive 15-minute period. The visitors had exited the FA Cup at this exact stage last season and were aiming to go further this time around.

With ten minutes remaining, Truro nearly found the equaliser. A cross into the Sutton box was struck first-time by Zac Bell from near the penalty spot, but Brits' athleticism allowed him to react and get a hand on the low-driven effort to preserve the 1-0 lead.

Draw and Next Round Details

Despite Truro's late efforts, Sutton did enough to earn the victory and advance to the first round proper of the FA Cup. The draw will take place on Monday evening, where Sutton will be joined by League One and League Two clubs. The first round fixtures are scheduled for the first weekend of November.
