The story of Fiona, once known as "Britain's loneliest sheep," has taken a joyful turn with the announcement of her first-time motherhood. Fiona's journey to fame began in 2023 when she was winched to safety from the foot of a steep coastal cliff near the Cromarty Firth in the Scottish Highlands. Initially spotted by kayaker Jill Turner in 2021, Fiona was seen alone again two years later, leading to her rescue and the poignant nickname that resonated worldwide. Her plight highlighted the challenges faced by animals in remote areas and sparked an outpouring of sympathy.
After her rescue, Fiona was taken into the care of Dalscone Farm in Dumfries, where she has been under the watchful eye of farm manager Ben Best. The farm has since become her sanctuary, providing the stability she lacked during her years of solitude.
A New Role: "World's Best Mum"
On Tuesday night, Fiona successfully delivered her twin lambs after a nine-hour labor, with a veterinarian on hand to assist. According to Mr. Best, Fiona has embraced her new role as a mother with remarkable ease. "She's doing great. She was a superstar," he told Sky News. "Now we're just making sure that they're happy and healthy, and that Fiona is maintaining good health as well."
The farm has proudly declared that Fiona has traded her title of "Britain's loneliest sheep" for "world's best mum." Her recovery from labor has been smooth, with no complications reported. "She's bounced back from her labour without any issues whatsoever," Mr. Best added. "All the signs are great and we're making sure the lambs are thriving."
Hope for a Brighter Future
Given Fiona's previous struggles to interact with other sheep, the farm hopes that motherhood will foster a close bond with her offspring, enhancing her quality of life. Mr. Best explained, "The whole reason we put her in lamb is so that she can get that bond with them and she'll have an amazing companionship going forward in her life. I think it's really going to make a massive difference to her quality of life as well."
The decision to breed Fiona was not taken lightly. Mr. Best revealed that extensive discussions were held to ensure it was the right choice for her well-being. "It's not a decision we took lightly. We had a lot of discussions about whether it was the right thing to do. But ultimately, for her as an animal, the best decision was to put her in lamb."
Pressure and Preparation
The past five months have been intense for the farm team, with the "eyes of the world" watching Fiona's progress. Mr. Best described the experience as "horrendous" and likened it to a "pressure cooker," with constant vigilance over her health and energy levels. "You see her lying in a funny position and you're like 'oh no, is she alright'," he said. However, he noted that Fiona's pregnancy was straightforward, with no issues, and she handled it exceptionally well.
Naming the New Arrivals
As for the twin lambs, their names are yet to be decided. Fiona herself was named after Cameron Diaz's character in the animated film Shrek, and there is consideration to name the newborns after Shrek and Princess Fiona's children—Fergus, Farkle, and Felicia. Alternatively, Mr. Best suggested names like Cliff, in reference to where Fiona was found, or Brora, a Highland village near the rescue site.
