A TikTok user known as Zoe has highlighted a natural riverside beach in Oxfordshire, located in a historic village once home to author Agatha Christie, which is accessible from London Paddington in approximately 45 minutes by train. In a video shared with her 53,600 followers, Zoe detailed her journey to Wallingford Beach, a popular wild swimming spot on the River Thames, and described the area as “beautiful” with enough attractions for a full day out.
Train Route and Scenic Walk to the Beach
Zoe explained that she took a train from London to Goring on Thames, with the station actually named Goring and Streatley. The journey involved a change at Reading and took about 45 minutes from London Paddington. From Goring, she walked along the Thames Path, a stretch of approximately seven miles, to reach Wallingford. She noted that the walk, while scenic with river and meadow views, felt quite long on a very hot day.
“It was a very hot day today and although there were lots of trees there wasn't quite enough for this level of heat, it is a lovely walk but I was very happy when it was over,” Zoe said in the video. She also mentioned that Goring itself is a lovely village worth visiting, and she stopped for coffee before starting her trek.
Wallingford's History and the Beach Experience
Upon arriving in Wallingford, Zoe observed that the village is full of interesting historic buildings, including a castle, and offers places to eat. However, due to the heat, she headed straight to Wallingford Beach. She found the main area busy but discovered a quieter spot further along, calling it her “own private beach.” She spent the rest of the day swimming, chilling, and eating.
Wallingford Beach is located on the eastern bank of the River Thames, just downstream from Wallingford Bridge. Zoe noted that the water quality is tested regularly and has been consistently clean, which encouraged her visit.
Return Journey and Accessibility
Zoe informed her followers that Wallingford does not have its own train station, but it is accessible by bus. She suggested taking the number 134 bus back to Goring, or the X40 River Rapids bus directly to Reading, where she caught a 25-minute train back to London. The village’s connection to Agatha Christie, who lived in several houses in England but mainly in Devon and Oxfordshire, adds to its appeal for visitors.
