Wandsworth Council has formally submitted planning proposals to overhaul Furzedown Recreation Ground in Tooting, a project backed by a £685,000 council allocation. The scheme, which focuses on redesigning the playground and skatepark, also aims to improve accessibility and connectivity across the popular South London park.
Key features of the proposed redesign
The application includes a comprehensive redesign of the park's playground and skatepark, with new inclusive play equipment and additional seating. The former bowling green would be redeveloped as part of the plans, and existing fences would be removed to open up the space. Planting and pathways would be adjusted to encourage better movement and visual connections throughout the park.
In addition, the area surrounding the park's pavilion would be made more welcoming, with potential future development of a café and toilets. However, these facilities are not part of the current application, according to the council.
Council's vision for an 'accessible, resilient' park
Planning documents state that the scheme aims to make Furzedown Recreation Ground "an accessible, resilient and attractive local park that supports play, informal recreation, social connection and everyday enjoyment." The documents elaborate: "The design aims to improve movement across the site, strengthen visual connections, create more comfortable and inclusive places to sit and meet, provide renewed play and activity opportunities, and introduce a softer landscape character through tree planting, biodiversity enhancements and more naturalistic forms."
The council has allocated £685,000 for park improvements, although the exact cost of the current application's works has not been disclosed. A decision on the plans will be made in due course.
