Two tennis courts in Holland Park, described as "failing" in a council report, are set for a full refurbishment, including new surfacing, equipment, and LED floodlights, pending approval at a Planning Sub-Committee meeting on Tuesday, September 8.
The courts, located in the south-western part of the Grade II listed park, require resurfacing and other works to ensure future games can proceed. Kensington and Chelsea Council, which owns the site and is carrying out the work, will hear the application at the upcoming committee meeting.
Council Report Highlights Urgent Need for Repairs
The plans follow a council report published in December 2025, which identified that courts at Holland Park and Kensington Memorial Gardens needed to be refurbished, warning that future games would otherwise be cancelled.
"The tennis court surfacing is failing, with almost complete loss of colour coating and signs of fretting on the macadam surface, as well as some courts requiring repairs due to damage from tree roots. Unless the courts are renewed future games will be cancelled," the report states.
Details of the Refurbishment Works
A total sum of £170,000 was approved by the Executive Director of Environment and Resident Services to fix up courts at both Holland Park and Kensington Memorial Gardens. The two Holland Park courts will receive new goals, nets, and posts, renewed court line markings, and LED floodlights if the plans are approved. The existing brick wall surrounding the courts will also be repaired.
No objections to the plans have been received by the council.
Minimising Disruption to Users
Works to refurbish the rest of the courts across Holland Park and Kensington Memorial Gardens will be spaced out throughout this year to minimise disruption to users.
