How to stop tiny fruit flies from invading your kitchen

As London enjoys a warm summer, many households are noticing an unwelcome increase in tiny fruit flies buzzing around kitchens. These persistent pests are not just a nuisance; they can quickly multiply if left unchecked. Fortunately, cleaning experts have shared several effective, natural methods to deter them without resorting to harsh chemicals.

The Lemon and Clove Trick

Cleaning specialist Anna Louisa, known on Instagram as @anna_louisa_at_home, recommends a simple yet powerful solution: insert cloves into half a lemon and place it in your fruit bowl. The combination of lemon and cloves releases aromas that fruit flies find highly offensive, effectively keeping them away from your fruit and your entire kitchen.

Interior specialist Keely Smith explained the science behind this method in a conversation with Ideal Home. She stated: "Lemons release limonene, which is a strong citrus compound that interferes with the way flies find food. When you stick cloves into the lemon, you're adding eugenol, which has a sharp, almost spicy scent that flies dislike even more. The combination of lemon and cloves throws off their senses and makes the area smell too intense and confusing for them to stick around."

Additional Natural Repellents

If the lemon and clove method isn't enough, Anna Louisa offers several other strategies to maintain a fly-free home. Placing fresh mint near an open window acts as a natural repellent, as flies are deterred by its strong scent. Sprinkling cinnamon around the base and inside the lids of your bins can also discourage flies from being attracted to unpleasant odors.

The Ultimate Simmer Pot

For a more comprehensive approach, Anna recommends preparing a simmer pot with simple ingredients: lemon, rosemary, cloves, lemongrass, and essential oils. She explains: "Fill a saucepan halfway with water, add one sliced lemon, one to two sprigs of rosemary, 10-20 cloves and 10-20 drops of lemongrass essential oil. Bring to the boil, then simmer. Top up the water as and when needed - refresh every couple of days when the scent starts to fade." This creates a pleasant aroma for your home while effectively repelling flies.

Why Fruit Flies Thrive in Summer

Fruit flies are common pests during warmer months, as they breed rapidly in decaying organic matter, especially overripe fruits and vegetables. They are attracted to fermenting substances, making kitchens a prime target. By implementing these natural deterrents, you can significantly reduce their presence without using chemical sprays.

According to pest control experts, fruit flies can lay up to 500 eggs at a time, and their life cycle is just about a week, so quick action is essential. These methods not only help keep your kitchen clean but also contribute to a more pleasant living environment during the hot summer months.
