The Met Office has issued a map showing a 'very high' risk of wildfires across London and the South East as temperatures are set to reach 35C. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has also issued an amber heat-health alert for southern England, including the East Midlands, East of England, South East, and London, in effect from Tuesday to Thursday.
Temperature peak and wildfire severity
Temperatures are expected to peak at 35C in south-east England on Wednesday, July 29. The Met Office's Fire Severity Index, produced in conjunction with Natural England, indicates 'very high' wildfire risk for London throughout the week until Sunday, August 2. In Headcorn, Kent, the risk is upgraded to 'exceptionally high' on Wednesday, with temperatures reaching 34C.
According to provisional Met Office data, July has been 3C above average across the UK, potentially ranking among the hottest three or four Julys on record. The dry conditions have turned parts of the city into 'tinderboxes', increasing wildfire danger.
Health alert and safety advice
The UKHSA amber alert warns that rising temperatures may increase health risks, particularly for vulnerable groups. Fire chiefs have stated that many wildfires are caused by everyday human activity. They advise: "Disposing of cigarettes safely, avoiding the use of disposable barbecues in open spaces and taking litter home can significantly reduce the risk of fires starting."
People are urged to report any signs of fire immediately by calling 999 and asking for the fire and rescue service.
Weather outlook for the coming days
The risk will reduce on Thursday, July 30, when temperatures drop about seven degrees to a peak of 27C, but the risk remains 'high'. According to BBC Weather, the rest of the week will see temperatures in the mid to late 20s, with the first chance of rain on Sunday, August 2. Further rain is expected next week.
