New research reveals that rising Arctic shipping traffic is seeding clouds with industrial aerosols, potentially accelerating the very climate change that opened the sea routes. Over the past 12 years, marine traffic in the Arctic has increased by about 40%, leaving trails of pollutants in the air that have a measurable climate effect.
How ship exhaust creates clouds
Aerosol particles in engine exhaust act as nuclei for water droplets, promoting cloud formation. Just like aircraft, ships can leave contrails behind them in the sky. A study by the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, published in Environmental Research Letters, explores this effect in the Arctic.
In winter, Arctic air is already hazy with industrial pollutants from Europe and Asia trapped by weather systems, so additional aerosols have little impact. But in summer, when sea traffic increases and the air is clear, the research suggests that a single vessel can affect cloud formation. This effect remains even with low-sulphur fuel, which is marketed as more environmentally friendly.
Impact on radiative forcing
The amount of cloud cover influences radiative forcing—the balance between incoming solar radiation and outgoing infrared radiation. More clouds can trap heat that would otherwise escape to space, amplifying the greenhouse effect.
The study's authors caution that further research is needed to confirm their results. However, the early signs indicate that the climate change enabling more Arctic shipping will itself be accelerated by that increase, creating a feedback loop.
