A small field in north Norfolk, England, has transformed from a single oilseed rape crop into a thriving wildflower meadow with more than 150 plant species, simply by being left alone and cut for hay once a year. The remarkable recovery, documented in a scientific paper in Restoration Ecology, challenges the common practice of sowing commercial wildflower mixes and could reshape how conservationists restore flower-rich meadows.
A natural transformation without intervention
The four-acre field, known as Sayer’s Old Meadow, was conventionally farmed with ploughing, fertilisers, and pesticides until 2005, when farmer Derek Sayer, 86, stopped cultivating it because yields were inconsistent. The land, which rises from springs feeding the Glaven chalk stream, was often boggy and was left “abandoned” for five years, becoming a forest of thistles. In 2011, his son, Carl Sayer, a professor of limnology and freshwater ecology at University College London, began studying the field’s growing diversity and initiated an annual hay-cut.
Fifteen years on, the thistles and arable weeds have almost completely vanished without human intervention, replaced by a flower-rich perennial sward that becomes more biodiverse each year. Among the plants recorded are common centaury, yellow rattle, and marsh and common spotted orchids, alongside a host of hoverflies and butterflies. Quail and whitethroats call from the hedges, and barn owls have nested in a field-edge box since last year.
Patience over commercial seed mixes
“Everyone is planting and seeding wildflowers, but sometimes we’re not patient enough,” said Carl Sayer, lead author of the paper. “You don’t always have to reach for that expensive commercial wildflower seed mix. We’ve forgotten that nature has known what to do for quite a long while.” The field’s success occurred without deep ploughing, top-soil removal, or sowing any commercial mixes—interventions often used in arable land restoration.
The nearest populations of some rare flowers now in the meadow are at least 3 miles (4.8km) away, surrounded by intensively farmed land. Sayer joked, “Everyone’s accused me of bringing it in on my upturned trousers but I don’t wear upturned trousers,” suggesting seeds may have arrived on the hooves or coats of wild deer.
A family shift in perspective
Derek Sayer was initially skeptical of his son’s experiment. “He started off saying: ‘What are you doing, Carl? What a load of rubbish.’ Now he’s like: ‘How many orchids are there this year?’” said Carl Sayer. During a tour, Derek still inspected the field for “weeds” like ragwort but admitted, “It looked a bit strange at first but I quite like it now.”
The annual hay cut, performed each August by a neighbouring farmer who feeds the biodiverse hay to his cattle, prevents the meadow from becoming oak woodland. Sayer noted, “Much more diversity is a tonic to cattle because it’s full of medicinals. The monoculture of a rye-grass field may not give them everything they need. The old farmers had it right.” The cut also reduces soil nutrients, allowing delicate wildflowers to flourish; yellow rattle, known as “the meadow maker” for parasitising grass, arrived naturally several years ago.
Cheaper, local, and more resilient than ‘McMeadows’
The self-willed meadow differs from generic “McMeadows” created from popular wildflower mixes dominated by oxeye daisies and knapweed. Sayer’s approach yields locally adapted plants that are likely more genetically diverse and costs far less. “Everyone will tell you this approach [not sowing wildflowers] doesn’t work unless you’re close to a seed source. But no one has done a long-term study like this,” he said.
The Sayers allow local people to walk through the meadow, and an informal path has formed along one side. “Everyone in the village loves it, people walk through it and respect it. It’s working to make people happy as well,” said Sayer. “It’s the thing I’m most proud of in my life. I love it. It’s hope – we can recover things. We just need to do less in the recovery process.”
